The formation of the XSE is explained as caused by mutant terrorists who continued in their violent ways following the Summers Rebellion that overthrew the Sentinel's control, The XSE was formed to police the threat and the M tattoo being a badge for officers.
2. Bishop & Shard's past in the future is explored more including their graduation into the XSE and the backgrounds of Malcolm and Randall.
3. Shard surpasses Bishop in rank in the XSE, Bishop receives a tip from Fitzroy that he passes along to Shard but it turns out to be a trap and Shard is turned into a vampiric Emplate.
4. Bishop captures Shard who has become an Emplate vampire and takes her to the Witness' base and makes a deal to work for him in exchange for creating a holographic version of Shard.
